There is a new trend to move patients out of nursing homes and into home care, giving patients more options and lowering costs. Of course some patients will still need nursing homes, but it’s estimated that about one-third of people in nursing homes could be cared for at home.

According to the Census Bureau, the percentage of people 65 and older who live in nursing homes has steadily decreased over the last 20 years, from 5.1% in 1990 to 3.1% in 2010.

One reason for the change is the high cost of institutional care: the average annual cost per person for nursing home care is about $75,000 nationwide, while in-home care costs around $30,000 to $60,000 a year.
