According to the Census Bureau, the percentage of people 65 and older who live in nursing homes has steadily decreased over the last 20 years, from 5.1% in 1990 to 3.1% in 2010.
One reason for the change is the high cost of institutional care: the average annual cost per person for nursing home care is about $75,000 nationwide, while in-home care costs around $30,000 to $60,000 a year.
